Ladner Seedy Saturday 2013

Its that time again! Ladner Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo is back for a second year. It was so much fun connecting with new gardeners that we just had to do it again. What a great way to start off the gardening season. This year our Seedy Saturday will be held on February 9, 2013 from 10-3 at the Ladner Baptist Church. Lets take a look at who came last year.

Robin Leake from Wild Ginger Designs joined out Seedy Saturday last year. Even though the event was held on a cool January day she had lots of beautiful plants for us to buy. Robin really has an eye for design when it comes to containers. If you have been to the Ladner Village Market, you will have seen her stunning planters.

Last year the pussy willows were so popular. Our friend, Lisa Blair, came to sell her seeds along with these willow branches.

How can you have a Seedy Saturday without seed companies? Stellar Seeds came to our event all the way from Kaslo. Just a heads up for this year, the family that runs this company lives near Johnson's Landing where the landslide occurred and this has really set them back this year.

West Coast Seeds will be returning to our event in February. Did you know their 2013 catalogue is ready? This seedaholic cant wait to peruse my favourite seed catalogue! I mean really, you can never have enough seeds, right?

Urban Bee came to our event last year so for those of you who want to learn about bees, talk to Lindsay Dault.

As soon as we opened the doors the people arrived. This was the first Seedy Saturday for Delta so we all stood in apprehension wondering if people would come. We had lots of vendors, a few not for profit groups and four wonderful speakers. And guess what? Its free!

We also had a seed swap and it will be back again in 2013. If you have saved seeds from plants, place any extras in a small envelope to trade for something you desire. Just be sure to label your seeds. This is a fun way to try something new.

Bill Bischoff came with his hardy Cyclamen. He really knows his Cyclamen!

There was everything from the Mushroom Man to Derry's Orchard to an interactive display put on the environmental department from the Corporation of Delta.

If you want coffee the church will be making coffee in the front lobby. I hear they may even be rustling up some food for us this year.

If you don't get enough information from all the vendors, then you can take home some free garden magazines. What a great way to start planning your spring garden. Buy a few seeds, a few starter plants and take home a couple of magazines. Listen to our line up of speakers which will be announced very soon. It will be a fun way to spend a Saturday in February before the garden season gets busy.

Growing Your Own Food

Carrot harvest   Growing your own food just became even more important than ever. As prices increased this fall we saw lettuce and cauliflower go up in price. Reasons for that are many but the drought we had could be one of the reasons. Overall the transportation costs of everything are up due to the high cost of fuel and that's being passed on to the consumer. Of course, many of us are not earning any more than we did before. I predict that 2023 will see another resurgence of food growing like we did at the beginning of the pandemic. Some of us may be doing it with less space than we had before so that creates more challenges. Just to let you know how popular gardening has become, our community garden has a waitlist of over twenty people. They may not get a spot in the garden for several years. It's probably time for a new community garden to be set up in the community.       To save money in the winter think about growing crops that store well like carrots, potatoes, win

Our ever popular seed swap returns so bring your seeds to trade for something else. Be sure to package your seeds in paper envelopes and that the seeds are clean before packing. Our vendors are filling the hall quickly and will have an array of plant related goods for sale. From seeds to plants and garden decor there will be something for everyone. Admission is by donation. Please help us continue to grow food for charitable organizations. As all gardeners know, soil and seed comes with a price and this event is our only fundraiser. Over the last few year the Ladner Community Garden has grown and donated vegetables to the All Saints Church monthly community m

Its Official!

Its official. We finally received our incorporation papers. I know, what does that have to do with a community garden? Well you just don't start planting as we found out very quickly. You have to apply for a name for your society through the provincial government. First you apply for a name by checking trademarks and copyrights. Luckily Ladner Community Garden Society wasn't taken. You pay a fee for the name right away. The next step is applying for incorporation. You want to form a society and have directors as you can't lease public space without going through this process. Okay, another fee, a hundred dollars to be exact. Applying for incorporation is writing bylaws which can be painful at best if you want to write your own. Thank you Mark for doing such a wonderful job writing our bylaws. If you don't write your own, there are easier ways such as following out set bylaws as given in the Society Act. Our hard work as paid off as we received our red seal of approval
